What is Art as Education / Education as Art?

​

As part of their overarching project: Art as Education / Education as Art, Illeris & Anundsen invite you to participate in an explorative workshop that focuses on 'inhabiting' art practices as a form of teaching. The aim is to explore how lived inquiry may at the same time be a form of art practice, everyday practice and education practice.

 

Through the workshop you will explore possible ways of ‘inhabiting' landscapes, places, practices, collectivities, perspectives…

 

Preparation:

 

Please read the texts listed in the schedule before the workshop. The reading will be emailed to you once you register.

 

Schedule:

 

Monday 7th May 2018

 

9.45 am: Introduction: Inhabiting Place

Short introduction to overall workshop themes: sensing space, listening, producing sounds, move, explore.

 

11:00 am: Workshop Part 1: Inhabiting Landscape

We will create ‘routes’ and ‘rhythm’ and learn how to notate, document and record them.

 

12:30 Break

1:30-3:30pm Workshop Part 1: Inhabiting Landscapes

 

We will explore relations between ‘routes’ and everyday arts and educational practices and learn how to notate, document and record them.

 

Tuesday 8th May 2018

 

9.45 am Workshop Part 2: Inhabiting Practice

Establishing an educational practice or ‘route’.

We will consider how we invite 'learners' into our practices.

We will consider how we co-create practices with 'learners'.

Professor Helene Illeris is Professor of Visual Art, Visual Culture and Arts Education. Dr Tormod W. Anundsen is Associate Professor of Music and Music Education. They work together at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway (UiA), where they teach MASTKUN an experimental transdisciplinary master's programme in arts. 

 

Helene and Tormod also conduct research together on the dynamics between artistic practice, research and education.  

 

Professor Helene Illeris is Professor of Art Education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, UiA  Her research interests include art education in schools and galleries with a special focus on aesthetic learning processes, contemporary art forms, and sustainability. In 2009-13 Helene was the leader of the Nordic and Baltic research network CAVIC (Contemporary Art and Visual Culture in Education) and she is an editor of the anthology EDGE: 20 Essays in Contemporary Art Education (Göthlund, Illeris & Thrane, 2015). She has also published several articles in English, Danish, Swedish, and Italian. Her latest paper is “’The Poetic Self is not a Fiction’: Aesthetic Experiences in Collective Learning Processes with Contemporary Art” (forthcoming in Danish). Helene is one of the coordinators of the research group Art and Social Relations at the UiA.

 

Dr Tormod Wallem Anundsen is Associate Professor of Musicology and Music Education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, UiA  where he is also a member of the Art and Social Relations research group. Anundsen has Directed the transdisciplinary Master’s programme MASTKUN in Arts (music, theatre, visual arts) at Agder since 2011. He has a methodological interest in the combination of ethnographic and arts-based methodologies, and his current research explores interactions between arts practice, research practice and education practice. Together with Professor Illeris he has led the research project Art as Education / Education as Art since 2015.
